Tennant Creek è a metà strada tra Katherine e Alice Springs. Nata nel 1934 sull’onda dell’ultima corsa all’oro, miniere ieri bestiame oggi, tremila abitanti quasi per metà aborigeni. Un Far West degli antipodi, con i suoi cappelloni, le case basse e le strade ampie bruciate dal sole, poca gente in giro se non al mattino presto o prima del tramonto. L’evento annuale è il rodeo, tappa finale del circuito locale. Gare di abilità con cavalli, vitelli e mucche, prove di resistenza su cavalli e tori, famiglie sugli spalti, bistecche arrosto e birra gelata. I partecipanti vengono dall’intero Northern Territory, aborigeni e bianchi senza evidenti distinzioni di gruppo, come tra il pubblico. Aggiustano stivali e speroni, chiacchierano rilassati, si concentrano, aspettando sulle staccionate il loro turno, l’energia e adrenalina del minuto di esibizione sugli animali frementi. All’apparenza un angolo di Mid West americano, ma è il centro dell’Australia. Fattorie, allevamenti, mandriani, espressione dell’economia primaria del luogo. Forme universali sviluppatesi autonomamente in contesti geografici diversi, solo in parte influenzate dal modello degli States. Se non per la musica country sparata dagli altoparlanti durante il rodeo, sopraffatta comunque dall’hard rock degli australiani Ac/Dc scelto dallo speaker per accompagnare i momenti forti dello show
   Tennant Creek is midway between Katherine and Alice Springs. Built up in 1934 following the last gold rush, goldmines yesterday cattle today, three thousand inhabitants nearly half Aboriginals. An antipodes Far West, with its big hats, one-storey houses and wide, sunburnt roads, few people around unless early in the morning or before sunset. The annual event is the rodeo, final stop of the local course. Ability competitions with horses, calves and cows, endurance tests on horseback and bullback, families on terraces, grilled steaks and ice-cold beer. Competitors come from all over the Northern Territory, Aboriginal people and white people without apparent differences just as it is among the spectators. They fix boots and spurs, chat in relax, concentrate waiting for their turn sitting on the fences, the energy and adrenalina of the one minute of exibition on the quivering animals. It may seem a corner of the American Midwest, but it’s the centre of Australia. Farms, cattle breeding, herdsmen, expression of the main economic source of the area. Universal shapes autonomously developped in different geographical settings, only partly influenced by the American model. With the country music for example, played out loud by the loudspeakers, but covered by the hard rock of the Australian Ac/Dc chosen by the speaker to accompany the strong moments of the show
