Van Gogh has been thinking about painting a night, starry sky for long. But he hesitates because of the difficulty of portraying such a tough subject from life. In Arles he finally paints Starry night on the Rhone, under a gaslight, with stars "that sparkle like a storm of diamonds and precious stones" that a camera wouldn't be able to seize
